“Saddam Disarmed” was conceived during the height of the US military build-up in Iraq. It
seemed that despite UN resolution 1441 that forced Iraq to eliminate all weapons of mass
destruction, the US was bent on seeing Saddam forcibly disarmed. In the original concept, I
imagined Saddam literally disarmed with his arms ripped from their sockets. In this final
version, I decided a less dramatic approach. Saddam’s arms are held behind his back giving
him the appearance from the front that he has no arms. His fingers are crossed as if he has a
secret to hide. Today, with no weapons of mass destruction found, maybe he didn’t have
anything to hid after all.
This piece is made in two section of thrown and altered ceramic sculpture mix. I used low fire
under glaze for the color effects and used a thin coat of gloss glaze to give it slight shine.
Saddam is sculpted as a caricature similar to cartoons you might see in a newspaper editorial.
