| Wondrous Strange: A Twenty-first Century Cabinet of Curiosities Opening reception: Thursday, July 22, 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. An Opening Reception not to be missed - an evening of art, performance and provocation! The opening reception is a costume party. Attendees are asked to dress as time travelers, looking to the late 18th through the early 20th century as sources for inspiration. Prizes will be awarded for best costumes. SFMOMA Artists Gallery at Fort Mason Building A, Fort Mason Center San Francisco, CA 94123 415.441.4777 Gallery Hours: Tuesday through Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Closing event in honor of Goethe's birthday: August 28, 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. The sixteenth century's cabinets of curiosities, precursors to today's museums, were encyclopedic collections of specimens from the natural world, as well as man-made artifacts. These cabinets served as educational resources for artists and natural philosophers of the early modern period in western Europe. Featuring works by more than a dozen Bay Area artists and including installations, photography, sculpture, and painting, the exhibition explores themes such as evolutionary biology and history, progress and decadence, and the carnal and the intellectual. These contemporary artists adopt a range of styles that pre-date twentieth-century modernism and mine the early modern period-that age of discovery for sources of wonder. Participanting artists: Misako Inaoka, Sharon Beals, Katherine Westerhout, Leslie Grunditz, Michele Muennig, Jo Ann Biagini, Bryan Tedrick, Jesse Hazelip, Kathy Aoki, Kirk Crippens, George Pfau, Donald Farnsworth, Jeremiah Jenkins, Agelio Batle, Shenny Cruces, Amit Greenberg, Steve Allen, Brandon Truscott, Philip Ringler, Claire Pasquier, Mike Shine |
